What I Wish I Knew Before Starting a Photography Business  | Tips for Photographers

If I could reach back in time and tell myself some advice when I was first starting out, I would have so much to say. So, if you are looking for real, honest tips for photographers, this post is for you.

Because here is the truth. Photography is not just about taking beautiful photos. It is about building a business with longevity. A business that serves clients well.

And sometimes that looks like answering emails at midnight. Or updating your website instead of shooting. Or learning how to run a whole-ass business when you thought you were just picking up a camera.

Tips for New Photographers:

Here is the part I wish someone had told me early on. Being a photographer is about 10 percent shooting and 90 percent running a business.

If you want to grow, you need to treat it like one.

A few things that changed everything for me:

Stay Organized

Running a photography business means juggling a lot of moving pieces: contracts, client communication, timelines, and deliverables.

Using a CRM like Dubsado can streamline your workflows and keep everything in one place. Organization doesn’t just save time; it creates a better client experience.

Alongside your systems, keep your finances separate from personal accounts and track every expense carefully. Including mileage!!! Those small details add up and make a big difference come tax season. (And I promise you… tax season comes every year even if you wish it didn’t haha)

Be Consistent

Success in photography doesn’t happen overnight. One blog post or one Instagram share won’t suddenly fill your calendar. Consistency is what builds trust and visibility over time. Keep showing up, sharing your work, and telling your story.

The photographers who grow are the ones who stay committed even when results feel slow.

Another really important tip for photographers? Invest in education.

While new gear is exciting, it’s not what drives bookings.

Understanding how to run your business… we’re talking marketing, pricing, client experience… that is what truly moves the needle. Investing in education helps you build a sustainable and profitable brand, not just take pretty photos.

Build Real Relationships

Photography is more than just images. It’s community. Support other photographers, collaborate with vendors, and build genuine connections.

When you focus on relationships over competition, you create opportunities, referrals, and a stronger presence in your industry.

TLDR?

  • Stay organized with systems using a CRM and track finances!
  • Show up consistently and keep sharing your work even when it feels slow
  • Invest in business education, not just gear
  • Build meaningful relationships within your community because that can make all the difference

Because Here Is The Reality: You Gotta Play The Long Game

I remember launching my website and wondering why no one was reaching out. It felt quiet for a while. But it took me a minute to realize: growth truly does not happen overnight.

You put in the work first.

A lot of people jump into photography because they love taking photos but after a year or two of slow growth, it’s easy to get discouraged. But you are building a business that can last as many years as you want it to. It’s about longevity and sustainability.

After you get all these pieces in place, you keep going.

You’re learning and showing up even when it feels slow. Over time, those small steps turn into something steady. Don’t freak out and pivot your strategy just because you’re not seeing instant gratification. Learn how systems work, try new content for the algorithm, keep posting blogs and putting yourself out there… that is how a business grows.

And the best part is, your art grows right alongside your business.
